A tropical storm warning has been issued for Bermuda as Tropical Storm Fiona moves northwest on a track that will put it near the island by Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
As of 2:00 p.m. EDT, Fiona was about 520 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, the NHC said. The storm is moving north-northwest at around 17 miles per hour, but it is expected to turn north tonight, then north-northeast by late Friday.
The center of the storm is expected to pass near Bermuda late Friday or early Saturday, according to the NHC. The NHC said Bermuda can expect tropical storm force winds by late Friday and possible rainfall amounts of one to three inches.
Maximum sustained winds are about 50 miles per hour, but some weakening is expected over the next 48 hours, according to the NHC.
While some Caribbean islands were threatened earlier, news reports indicate Fiona spared the region.
Further east, moving slowly across the Atlantic Ocean at around 7 miles per hour, Gaston intensified into a tropical storm before scaling back again to a tropical depression earlier today. The NHC said some re-strengthening is expected over the next 48 hours.
Gaston is currently about 1,500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, the NHC said. It is moving west-northwest, and should continue in that direction for the next couple of days.
