A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck near the Ontario-Quebec border region in Canada, about 33 miles north/northeast of Ottawa, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake struck at 1:41 p.m. today, and news reports indicate that there is no reported serious damage, and that shaking was felt as far south as central New York.
According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred in the Western Quebec seismic zone. Earthquakes cause damage in the zone about once a decade, USGS said, with smaller earthquakes felt three or four times a year. The two largest damaging earthquakes in the zone were a magnitude 6.1 quake in 1935 and a magnitude 6.2 quake in 1732, which caused significant damage in Montreal.
