Sarasota-based FCCI Insurance Group has been named to the 2009 AARP Best Employer for Workers Over 50 list. Coming in at No. 40, the company was recognized for its flexible work schedules, fitness classes, and dependent care reimbursement accounts, which allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for eldercare. Forty-two percent of FCCI's employees are age 50 or older, with an average tenure of more than eight years.
Any U.S.-based company with at least 50 employees is eligible to apply for inclusion on the biennial list. Judging is based on specific criteria, including recruiting practices; opportunities for training; education and career development; workplace accommodations; alternative work options; employee health and pension benefits; and benefits for retirees. AARP noted that by 2016, 33.5 percent of the total U.S. workforce will be age 50 or older, up from 28 percent in 2007.
