A Massachusetts man and his wife are charged in an indictment that includes mail fraud, identity fraud, and an insurance fraud scheme that involved submitting false claims that they had been injured by ingesting pieces of glass in food that was served to them.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Ronald and Mary Evano engaged in the scheme by attempting to rip off establishments in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, and the District of Columbia by allegedly ingesting glass particles intentionally and then falsely claiming that the restaurants, hotels, and supermarkets were responsible.
An investigation by the FBI and the Massachusetts Insurance Fraud Bureau revealed that the Evanos fraudulently obtained $200,000 by submitting their claims under a variety of identities and false social security number information. The two face 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine on each count of mail and wire fraud.
Ronald Evano has been arrested, but Mary is still on the loose.
